Everyday recovery after a war-related injury

A practical guide for injured people and the family members, friends, neighbours and community volunteers supporting them. It uses occupational therapy principles to make daily activities safer, easier and more meaningful when professional services or equipment are limited.

Use this guide for everyday support—not diagnosis or treatment. Community helpers can listen, encourage, make the environment safer and help with familiar activities. Do not change medicines, dressings, catheters, splints, prostheses or exercise plans unless a trained health worker has shown you exactly what to do.

Using OT principles in everyday lifeနေ့စဉ်ဘဝတွင် လုပ်ငန်းကုထုံးအခြေခံမူများ အသုံးပြုခြင်း

Help the person do what matters to themလူအတွက် အရေးကြီးသောအရာကို လုပ်နိုင်အောင် ကူညီပါ

Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on everyday activities: washing, dressing, eating, caring for family, working, farming, studying, cooking, worship and community life. Families and communities can use the same basic idea by looking at three things together: what the person can do today, how the activity could be made easier, and what could change in the surroundings.

The goal is not to “do therapy” to someone. Ask permission, agree on one meaningful goal, let the person do every safe part they can, offer only the help they want, and stop if pain, fatigue, fear or other symptoms are getting worse.

Medical devices still need trained fitting.

Look at the person, the activity, and the environment

Begin by asking how the person usually does the activity, which parts matter most and what help feels comfortable. Watch them try a safe part so you can notice what supports success and what gets in the way—such as strength, balance, sensation, vision, hearing, thinking, pain, fatigue or confidence.

Pressure care

When a person with a neurological condition cannot move or has reduced movement, they may be unable to shift their weight while sitting or lying down. Pressure on the same skin area for too long can cause a pressure injury, also called a pressure sore or bedsore. People with spinal cord injury are at high risk because they may need help to move and may not feel pain or pressure normally.

Burns

After a burn has healed, scar tissue may become thick, dry or tight and make everyday movement harder. A contracture happens when scarred skin and tissues shorten and hold a joint or body part in a bent or limited position. This can affect dressing, washing, eating, walking, sleeping, work and social participation. Early, consistent rehabilitation can reduce avoidable loss of movement.

Eardrum ruptures often heal within weeks; inner-ear damage may be permanent.
